Missive #54 – Lack of Appreciation Society

This artist’s rendition of some outer space phenomena seems like it must have been inspired by the Star Trek VI poster:

Postcard text:
A short list of things I left the USA without appreciation for:
– Dave Letterman (sorry Mel!)
– Pearl Jam (sorry Naomi!)
– Three’s Company
– Gilligan’s Island
– Jazz music
– The Grateful Dead (sorry Marin!)

Many of the recent postcards made me realise how much the move from the USA is on my mind, making me consider its absence obsessively, like a missing tooth. In an attempt toΒ  balance things a little I’ve decided to list a few things I am not missing from the USA.

  1. Yippeee.. another snail mail to look forward to!

I grew up with Three's Company and Gilligan's Island, though I haven't seen them since I was pretty young (probably best to stay that way). I'm the same with Dave Letterman… and Saturday Night Live. And… most sit-coms actually. Oh.. and US news broadcasts – I didn't watch them for the whole 10 years I was there – BBC news for me (I was a little out of touch with my community – obviously!) I wasn't into the grunge music thing… Nirvana, Pearl Jam… I didn't really get it. Why so serious? πŸ˜‰

Moving countries is HARD! It took me *years* to adjust to living in the US, and I didn't understand all the good things I had there until it was way too late (how I miss driving and working!). I've learnt my lesson though.. a couple of years in India and now I'm extremely thankful to be in the West. I even love Australia again… WTF! haha πŸ˜‰ It took a long look at the real world to remind me how lucky I had always been. That being said, if I am fortunate enough to have choice… I don't think I want to live in the US again. I might struggle with the UK too – for the same reasons you cite. Think I'll stick with the Antipodes for as long as we can πŸ™‚

  2. Poor postcard arrived in the middle of a burst of winter… something about our letterbox and how the postie puts the mail into it makes *everything* sopping wet. So… it's dried out and is on the fridge next to the other one (looking a little worse for wear!).

  3. thanks Jude – I'm sad that it got soaked.. can you scan them in so I can see?? I'd love to post an update with their arrival conditions.

I am wondering what I can do to prevent it – you should talk to your postie – you don't want that to happen to something really important!!
