FIVE LESSONS I LEARNED FROM JERRY GOLDSMITHS CAREER THAT MAKE ME A BETTER ARTIST

#2. DEVELOP A BAG OF TRICKS

Jerry would say he never went into a job with a fixed idea of what he would do – he’d watch the film and see what emerged. And yet, inspiration wouldn’t always come, he’d fall back on his years of experience. From the start of his career scoring live radio dramas, Jerry developed a host of techniques and (almost) never-fail tricks. These include signature rhythms for action beats, dissonant textures for tense scenes. When you know an artist’s work you see their fingerprints all over it, and sometimes getting from A to B it’s about following well-worn grooves, not carving new paths.
