The kitten, at best a few weeks’ old, dropped off the side of the curb and pawed at the grate in the gutter even as cars and motorbikes passed perilously close by, oblivious. A group of children went over to see, picking it up for a moment before letting it go again. It returned to the grate, mewling piteously, putting its face to the gaps in the grate. Somehow, in an instant, it succeeded in slipping into the drain, and disappeared from view. I watched from the car, briefly stopped at the light, there was nothing I could do.
