Scott Squires published an excellent blog post yesterday, a sobering set of pieces of advice for people wanting to join the VFX industry, based around the mis-apprehensions that young people have when they join the industry. It sparked a lot of debate, some seeing it as an example of how everything is going to hell, others as simple wisdom about he reality of the working world today. The ones that resonated with me were his first two pieces of advice, which boil down to “you probably wont be the best, there’s not much room at the top.” When I joined the industry there were people around me who seemed to be in charge who had themselves only recently joined. As I’ve moved up I’ve seen others of my peers go on to get accolades, awards and oscars, and it’s safe to say that that will never be me. It’s been a hard lesson to learn, to be happy with what I have and the mere fact that people want to work with me with reasonable regularity should be comfort enough that I am of use to people in my chosen field. Good enough.

  1. Anonymous.. ANONYMOUS! I know who you are, JN. Ahh there's a difference between working on a film that wins an Oscar and being the person who wins the Oscar. The team doesn't get to display their Oscar in the loo or whatever… and how many times has someone thanked creature fx in their acceptance speech?
