#255 – Wahh Wahh Enjoy Not Getting Paid

Artie Laing [JL – should be Lange], a comedian who was (is? I should check) on the Howard Stern show [JL – he isn’t any more, but thankfully still alive], used to do this thing when a famous person would complain about their life, he would make a mocking “wahh wahh” sound that would undercut whatever they were saying. At the risk of sounding too whiney and having him say – “aww visual effects is so difficult wahh wahh”, just as I was writing about the working time agreement and complaining about how the media talks about CG, Digital Domain, a company I’ve worked for twice, was revealed to be trying to staff 30% of their workforce with student labour through their own institute in Florida – not just free, but people PAYING THEM for an education. An insult to working people, students, and generally good ethical practises. Lest anyone in VFX think that their job or livelihood is safe, if big companies are trying to do this, how much are you willing to endure? How much is too much? WAHH WAHH!

The debate in the VFX industry about working conditions and fair treatment is heating up again, thankfully. Here is a related article about organising happening at Sony Pictures Imageworks. I’ll have to write another postcard discussing Unions and my feelings about them, but I am very happy that people are taking some action.
