We were cycling along the Thames, from Kew to Teddington. Still within the confines of London, it’s an unspoilt part of the river, not as heavily travelled as the paths East and West of it. The sun was setting, and a brief spring rain having laid down a rainbow with a heavy saturated brush moments earlier. It took little imagination to cast oneself back a couple hundred years, as the sun glowed behind a Regency manor house on the rich green banks. My mind, ever cinematic, called to mind the perfect soundtrack – Delius’s “On Hearing The First Cuckoo In Spring”
